I see you work with colors too. Is this mean to be black and white or do you intend to add colors? (to me it seems pure black and white stuff but who knows)

this project, and all the projects i am doing for the time being, are all black and white.

i do love colors, but i decided to focus on black and white for a while...

Great. Sometimes I feel myself underestimated to do mostly black and white stuff. I really can't work in full colors, so I like to see how some black and white works come out very well. That gives me confidence in my own works.

oh man, working with just black and white is an art form in and of itself!! Figuring out what kind of pen or brush stroke or mark you want to use, when you want to mix those elements up on a page or within an image (i.e. different kinds of shading on one object), how you can get a push and pull dynamic to your art without color... all of that is pretty serious stuff.

it's fun to work in colors if you enjoy it, but really you could spend your whole life experimenting with black and white and never even scratch the surface.

if you pick up any instructional book about drawing with pen or pencil or whatever, you can see how deep the world of black and white can be...

and of course, looking at stuff by frank miller, jim woodring, mike mignola (his art book with non colored drawings and stuff), jeffery brown, and all the other awesome black and white artists out there is a thrill and inspiration.

i live in japan, where a lot of comics is thin lines with dot tones added for shading. It's a valid style, and I can see why people might appreciate it, but I tend to like the more bold stuff you find with jim woodring or mike mignola.

looking at japanese action comics from the 70s is a treat, though, because stuff like the very first kamen rider series features artwork with very little or no dot tone work, and that is a really inspirational example of what the pen can do all by itself. It is valuable because it is from a different culture, so it is an example of a slightly different way of attacking the problem of expressing images and emotions with the pen only...

good luck with your pen work!!

It's fine, but this is my least favorite out of all the covers. The rigid grid makes the whole thing look static, and since there is no obvious storytelling drive to be found within the panels, the cover lacks a little something, in my opinion.

Thanks, man! I will take those words seriously.

I am starting to be drawn towards this grid pattern myself. I kind of like the "comic booky" feel of it. But I also totally see what you are saying about it being kind of static and not having an obvious storytelling drive. I'm going to give it a lot of thought and also maybe play a bit with the format of #1 on that last batch of ideas.

Thanks for "chiming in"!!

I'm certainly the last person who has anything to say about fixed grid patterns, so I certainly see where you're coming from!

the last person has to turn out the lights and lock the door.

i am toying with some non grid ideas that are different from #1 in that last batch... for some reason i don't like #1 as much as i should, but i do want to play with some non grid ideas...
